Network
Connect the station by Ethernet, Wi-Fi or cellular, run its own Wi-Fi hotspot, and keep or undo a network change.
The Network page sets up how the station connects. It has five tabs: Ethernet, WiFi, Hotspot, Cellular and Cloud Upload. Cloud Upload has its own page: Cloud upload.
Who can open it: Admin and Factory.
The station can use several connections at once. The status icons in the top bar show which ones reach the internet.
You can cut yourself off
If you are connected to the console over the connection you are changing, a wrong setting can end your session. On firmware 4.1 and later the station puts the old settings back by itself if the change breaks its connection. See Network change banner. The station's hotspot is a safe way in while you work: see Hotspot.
Ethernet tab
The Current IP box shows the address the Ethernet port has right now.
| Field | Allowed values | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Mode | DHCP or Static | DHCP takes an address from the network's router. Static uses the address you enter. |
| IP Address | An IPv4 address. Static only. | The station's address. |
| Subnet Mask | An IPv4 mask, for example 255.255.255.0. Static only. | The size of the local network. |
| Gateway | An IPv4 address. Static only. | The router the station sends internet traffic through. |
| Primary DNS, Secondary DNS | IPv4 addresses, optional. Static only. | Name servers. |
Save applies the settings. If you are using the console over Ethernet and the address changes, a window follows the change: it waits for the station at its new address and takes you there. When the new address comes from DHCP, the window cannot know it and tells you to look it up in your router's list of DHCP clients.
WiFi tab
Connects the station to a Wi-Fi network as a client.
| Control | Allowed values | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Enable WiFi | On or off | Turns the Wi-Fi client on or off. Saves by itself. |
| SSID | Up to 32 characters | The network's name. |
| Password | 8 to 63 plain characters, or blank for an open network | The network's password. A saved password is never shown; the box says it is saved on the station, and you leave it blank to keep it. An Admin can press Show to see it. Forget clears it. |
| Mode | DHCP or Static | As for Ethernet. Static shows IP Address, Subnet Mask, Gateway and DNS fields. |
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| Scan Networks | Lists the networks the station can hear, with signal strength in dBm and security type. Select copies a network's name into SSID. Right after Wi-Fi is switched on the button reads Checking WiFi… for up to 20 seconds while the radio starts. |
| Save | Connects with the new settings. |
| Forget WiFi | Disconnects and clears the saved network and password, after you confirm. |
Hotspot tab
The station can run its own Wi-Fi network so that you can reach the console on site with a phone or laptop, without any other network. It runs alongside the station's other connections.
| Shown | What it is |
|---|---|
| Status | Active, with minutes remaining and the number of connected devices, or Inactive. |
| SSID | The hotspot's name: XTM- followed by the last four digits of the station's serial number. |
| IP | While active: 192.168.4.1. Open this address in your browser once you have joined the hotspot. |
| Field | Allowed values | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Password | 8 to 63 characters | The hotspot's Wi-Fi password. On firmware 4.1 and later every station has its own random password from the factory. It can only be changed while the hotspot is stopped. |
| Auto-timeout | 15, 30, 60 or 120 min | The hotspot switches itself off after this time. |
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| Save Config | Saves password and timeout. |
| Start Hotspot | Starts the hotspot. It takes several seconds. |
| Stop Hotspot | Stops it. |
The hotspot can also be started with the button on the station, and from the Live3 app over Bluetooth, which also gives the phone the password. See Use the hotspot.
Hotspot changes are not checked by the rollback guard described below.
Cellular tab
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Enable Cellular | Turns the modem on or off. Saves by itself. Turning it off also turns off data. |
| Enable Data | Turns mobile data on or off. Needs Cellular on first. |
Access point (APN)
The APN settings come from your SIM provider. Saving restarts mobile data with the new settings. If the box shows a note that the value is "as it is set in the modem today", nothing has been saved from the console yet.
| Field | Allowed values | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| APN | Letters, digits, dots and hyphens, up to 62 characters | The provider's access point name, for example internet. |
| Authentication | Automatic, PAP, CHAP or None | How the station logs in to the provider. Automatic suits most SIMs. |
| Username | Up to 64 plain characters, no quotes, backslashes or braces | Only if the provider gives one. |
| Password | Up to 64 plain characters, no quotes, backslashes or braces | Only if the provider gives one. Needs a username. A saved password is never shown. |
Save APN applies the settings.
Network change banner
On firmware 4.1 and later, every change to Ethernet, Wi-Fi or cellular settings, from this page, from Live3 or from the Live3 app, is checked by the station before it is kept. While a change is being checked, an amber banner shows at the top of every tab.
- Checking the new network settings. For about 20 seconds after the change the station waits for the connections to settle.
- New network settings are waiting for confirmation. The station keeps the change by itself once every connection that had internet before has it again. Otherwise it puts the previous settings back when the countdown ends: 5 minutes, or 10 minutes when a Wi-Fi connection is still coming up.
- If it rolls back, the banner says The new network settings did not work and then that the previous settings were restored.
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| Keep this change | Tells the station the change is right, so it is kept straight away. Use it when you can still reach the station. |
| More time | Adds 10 minutes to the countdown, up to one hour in all. Greyed when the hour is used up. |
A change saved for the next restart shows "Network settings were saved and take effect when the station restarts." It is checked after the restart.
Messages you may see
| Message | What it means |
|---|---|
| Invalid IP address / Invalid subnet mask / Invalid gateway / Invalid DNS1 address | One of the static fields is not a valid IPv4 address. |
| SSID cannot be empty | Enter a network name. |
| The Wi-Fi password must be 8 to 63 plain characters. | Wi-Fi passwords outside that length are not valid. |
| Enter the password for (network). | You changed the network name, so its password is needed too. |
| Enable Cellular first | Data cannot be turned on while cellular is off. |
| The username changed. Enter the password that goes with it, or use Forget. | A new APN username needs its password. |
| No change to the APN settings. | Nothing was different, so nothing was applied. |
| No networks found | The scan heard no networks. Move closer or check the antenna. |
| Stop the hotspot to change the password. | The password box is locked while the hotspot runs. |
| The new network settings did not work, so the station put the previous ones back. | The change broke the station's connection and was undone. |
| The new network settings are working and have been kept. | The check passed. |
