Firmware updates

How a signed firmware release reaches a station, what has to be true before it installs, and what happens if an install fails.

Station firmware is the software that runs the station, including this console. On firmware 4.1 and later, releases can reach a station over the air: Live3 decides which release a station should have, the station fetches and checks it, and an Admin installs it.

Status as of 29 Sep 2026

Over-the-air updates are part of firmware 4.1 and are still being tested. They are not yet offered to customer stations. If your station needs an update, contact Aeron support.

Releases are signed

Every release is signed by Aeron. The station checks the signature and every part of the download before installing anything. A release that fails the check is not installed. The same applies to the package for the station's measurement co-processor, which the station refuses unless it carries Aeron's signature.

How a release reaches a station

  1. 1

Live3 assigns a release. Which release a station should run is decided in Live3, according to how the station is set to update. The station never picks a version by itself.

  2. 2

The station downloads it and checks it. A station with internet downloads the release itself. A station with no internet can get it from the Live3 app: the app downloads the release where there is signal and sends it to the station over its hotspot.

  3. 3

It is staged. A downloaded, fully checked release waits on the station. Nothing is replaced yet.

  4. 4

An Admin installs it. The Firmware tab on the Device page shows the installed version, what is staged, and an install button. You can also ask the station to check with Live3 now.

Three things must be true before a release installs

  1. A release newer than the installed one is staged, and every part of it has been verified.
  2. Installing updates is switched on for this station. It is off by default, so a station never installs by surprise.
  3. The person installing is signed in as Admin or Factory.

If any one is missing, the console tells you which, in plain words.

If an install goes wrong

  • Before changing any file, the station records that an install is in progress. If power is lost halfway, it finishes putting the old version back when it starts again.
  • A failed install is rolled back to the previous version, and the failure is reported to Live3.
  • After three failures of the same release, the station stops trying that release.
