Recover from a bad network change

Get a station back after a network setting cut it off, by waiting for the automatic rollback, using the hotspot, or pressing the Ethernet reset button.

Goal: a station that a network change cut off is reachable again, with working network settings.

Try these in order. The first needs nothing from you.

Before you start

  • To change settings once you are back in, you need the Admin role.
  • For the hotspot or the reset button, you need to be at the station.

Steps

  1. 1

Wait for the station to undo it (firmware 4.1 and later). After any change to Ethernet, Wi-Fi or cellular settings, from the console, Live3, the Live3 app or a configuration restore, the station checks that it still has the connections it had before. If not, it puts the previous settings back by itself when the countdown ends: 5 minutes, or 10 minutes when a Wi-Fi connection is still coming up. Only the sections you changed are restored. This carries on across a restart. Then reconnect as before.

  2. 2

Get in over the hotspot. If the change was kept but you still cannot reach the station, go to it and start the hotspot. Hotspot settings are never changed by a network change, so this way in always works. Open https://192.168.4.1, sign in, and fix the setting on Network.

  3. 3

Reset the Ethernet port with the reset button. If you need the Ethernet port back and cannot sign in, press and hold the station's IP reset button for about 3 seconds. The status light blinks five times. The Ethernet port goes back to the factory default static address, with public DNS servers. Wi-Fi, cellular and hotspot settings are not touched. Connect a computer set to the same network as the default address, or ask Aeron support for it, then open the console and set the address you want (see Set a static IP).

Check it worked

On firmware 4.1 and later, an automatic rollback shows on the Network page as The new network settings did not work and then that the previous settings were restored. A reset button press is written to the Activity Logs. The status icons in the top bar show which connections have internet again.

If something goes wrong

  • A good change was undone. If the whole site lost internet during the countdown, the station cannot tell that from a bad change, and puts the change back. Make the change again once the site is back online.
  • You want to keep a change straight away. While the banner shows, click Keep this change. Click More time to add 10 minutes, up to one hour in all.
  • Nothing brings it back. Contact Aeron support.
