Set a static IP
Give the station's Ethernet port a fixed address on your network.
Goal: the station's Ethernet port uses a fixed address you chose, and you can reach the console at it.
Before you start
- You need the Admin role.
- From your network administrator: a free IP address, the Subnet Mask, the Gateway, and optionally a Primary DNS and Secondary DNS.
- If you work over Ethernet, you will be moved to the new address. Working over the hotspot avoids that.
Steps
- 1
Open the Ethernet tab. Go to Network and open the Ethernet tab. Current IP shows the address the port has now.
- 2
Choose Static. Set Mode to Static.
- 3
Enter the address. Fill in IP Address, Subnet Mask and Gateway, and the DNS servers if you have them. All are IPv4 addresses.
- 4
Save. Click Save. If you are using the console over Ethernet, a window follows the change, waits for the station at its new address and takes you there. Your computer must be on the same network as the new address.
- 5
Confirm the change (firmware 4.1 and later). When the amber banner shows, and you can reach the station at its new address, click Keep this change. If the change cuts the station off, it puts the old settings back by itself when the countdown ends.
Check it worked
Current IP on the Ethernet tab shows the new address, and the Ethernet icon in the top bar is a green tick. A yellow mark means connected with no internet: check the gateway and DNS.
If something goes wrong
- Invalid IP address, Invalid subnet mask, Invalid gateway, Invalid DNS1 address: a field is not a valid IPv4 address.
- You can no longer reach the station: see Recover from a bad network change. The station's hotspot is not affected by Ethernet settings.
- Going back to DHCP: set Mode to DHCP and save. The new address then comes from your router; look it up in the router's list of DHCP clients.
The WiFi tab has the same Static option for a fixed Wi-Fi address.
