Alerts
Email alerts when a reading crosses a limit you set, or when a station stops reporting.
Alerts watch your stations for you. A rule either watches one parameter against a threshold, or watches a whole station for silence, and emails a list of addresses when it fires. Recipients do not need a Live3 account, so a shared mailbox or an on-call address works. The screen also keeps a history of every alert that fired and every email that was sent.
How to get there. Choose Alerts in the left navigation. New rules are created for the station selected in the station switcher in the top bar.
Key areas
| Area | What it does |
|---|---|
| Rules tab | Every rule on the stations you can access, including rules a colleague created. Columns: Device, Type, Parameter, Cond., Threshold, Email, Enabled, and Actions (edit or delete). Search by device, parameter or email. |
| Add Rule | Opens the form for a new rule on the station selected in the top bar. |
| Send Test Email | Sends a test message to an address you choose, to check that alert emails reach it. |
| Enabled switch | Turns a rule on or off without deleting it. |
| Status tab | When each alert fired and cleared for the selected station: Fired, Cleared, Duration, Rule and Status (Active or Resolved). Pick a date range; the last seven days are shown first. |
| Log tab | Every alert email sent for the selected station: when it was sent, the rule, the kind of email, the value that triggered it, the recipients, whether it was delivered, and a reference to quote to support. |
How an alert fires
- Parameter threshold. The rule fires when the parameter crosses your value (greater than, less than, equal to, and so on) for two readings in a row. A single spike that recovers on the next reading sends nothing.
- Station offline. The rule fires when the station sends no data at all for the duration you set, from 5 minutes up to 30 days.
- Reminders. While the problem lasts, you get at most one reminder email every 24 hours.
- Recovery. When readings return to normal (or the station reports again), the alert closes and shows as Resolved in the Status tab. No email is sent for this. The next breach starts a new alert.
Common tasks
Get an email when a reading goes out of range
- Pick the station in the top bar.
- On the Rules tab, click Add Rule and choose Parameter threshold.
- Choose the parameter, the condition and the threshold value. Turn on Show recent values for reference to see the parameter's recent readings against your threshold before you save.
- Add up to 10 recipients (press Enter or a comma after each address). Your own email is filled in to start with.
- Optionally add a short message describing what the rule detects, then save.
Know when a station goes silent
- Pick the station in the top bar.
- Click Add Rule and choose Station offline.
- Set the silence threshold in minutes, hours or days, add recipients, and save.
Pause or remove a rule
- On the Rules tab, find the rule (use the search box if the list is long).
- Use the Enabled switch to pause it, or the delete action to remove it for good. Deleting cannot be undone.
You can edit a rule's parameter, threshold and recipients later, but not change it from one alert type to the other. Create a new rule instead.
Check whether an alert email was delivered
- Pick the station in the top bar and open the Log tab.
- Set the date range. Each row shows whether the email was Sent or Failed; hover a failure to see why.
